About Us
How We Began:
The Compass Theater began in 1997 as a non profit organization. Our commercial theater
had recently closed leaving a big gap for entertainment in our town. A group of adults and
students in our community wrote a grant to the State of Alaska to provide an opportunity to
develop in the youth of the community ideals of business management, marketing,
responsibility, resourcefulness, and respect. The theater is a self sustaining business that
reinvests all proceeds to community-based youth programs. The corporation is organized
exclusively for educational and charitable purposes. We are a 501(c) (3) organization. We
strive to provide quality entertainment for kids, adults and families. The grant was awarded to
purchase the equipment to open a movie theater.
Northern Nights Theater is located in the Wright Auditorium on the campus of Petersburg City
Schools. The theater is a joint partnership with Petersburg Schools. The Wright Auditorium is
a busy place and sometimes our movie schedule is interrupted by these
wonderful shows. The Wright Auditorium is used during the days and evenings for school
musical performances, assemblies, and plays performed by the students of Petersburg
Elementary, Middle and High School. There are also plays presented by the Mitkof Mummers
twice a year and several times a year recitals and performances by local musical and dance
educators are offered. We occasionally have performances from out of town. In the past we
enjoyed performances by Chubby Checkers and George Winston right here in Petersburg!
We have a staff of students and a volunteer board comprised of students and adults. We are
always looking for adults to serve on our board. All the student employees are also members of
the Compass Board. We have an adult theater manager and assistant manager, one of whom
is on staff whenever a movie is shown. Our movies are on a traveling circuit through Southeast
Alaska allowing us to receive recently released titles. We hope you enjoy the movies and don't
forget the Popcorn!
